Building permit activity in the central Alberta community of Red Deer indicates a significant rebound from the dark days of the oil price depression.

The Red Deer Construction Association reports that he total value of building permits from February 2016 to February of this year increased 75 per cent. “Building permits rose from an estimated $5.5 million in February 2016 to $9.6 million last month,” the association reports. “The number of permits increased significantly as well, from 59 to 96.”

Residential and commercial sectors were strong again, with permit values last month estimated at $5.3 million and $4.3 million respectively.

Major contributors to February totals include $1.3 million in work to Goodlife Fitness at Parkland Mall, $500,000 in finishes to the new Giant Tiger department store and $450,000 in renovations to the Alberta Courthouse.

Monthly permit statistics are also available on Red Deer’s municipal website at Red Deer Open Data Catalogue.
