Build Canada Homes launches RFI to advance modern construction methods for affordable housing

Build Canada Homes (BCH) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to engage Canadian firms specializing in modern methods of construction (MMC), a move aimed at accelerating the delivery of affordable housing across the country.

Responses to the RFI are due by March 5, 2026.

The RFI is seeking input from companies involved in modular, panelized and prefabricated building systems to better understand industry capabilities, business models and delivery approaches. Firms responding to the RFI will also have the option to register for a forthcoming public directory of MMC providers, intended to raise awareness of the sector’s capacity and expertise.

Information gathered through the RFI will help inform BCH’s upcoming prequalification process and support the identification of high-potential MMC firms for future housing projects and partnerships. While participation does not guarantee future work, BCH says the process offers companies an opportunity to help shape procurement strategies and signal interest in BCH-led developments.

A broad range of firms are encouraged to respond, including volumetric modular builders, panelized system manufacturers and design-build firms.

“Modern methods of construction can transform how we build homes—making delivery faster, more cost-effective and more consistent,” said Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson. “This RFI is an opportunity for Canadian firms to help shape the future of housing in Canada.”

BCH chief executive officer Ana Bailão said the initiative is focused on finding scalable solutions to Canada’s housing shortage. “Canada needs innovative solutions to meet the urgent demand for affordable housing,” she said. “Modern methods of construction offer a faster, smarter way to build, and this RFI is about partnering with industry to unlock that potential at scale.”

Launched on Sept. 14, 2025, Build Canada Homes is a federal agency mandated to scale up affordable housing supply by leveraging public land, deploying flexible financial tools and acting as a catalyst for modern construction approaches. The agency works with non-profits, Indigenous organizations, private developers and all orders of government to accelerate housing delivery.

According to BCH, future developments it supports will prioritize Canadian materials and factory-built housing and other MMC approaches, helping create predictable demand, strengthen domestic supply chains and support job creation in the housing sector.
