President Fernando Goncalves says his company performed all masonry work on the Hampton Inn project, in- cluding the exterior veneers and cement block walls. “St. John’s is a very windy and rainy city,” he says. “It was difficult to perform work with a constant pace throughout the project. We had to adapt and work at a higher pace and put more hours in to it when the conditions let us.” Goncalves says his team com- pleted the work ahead of schedule. He says the hotel's site presented challenges, with uneven ground and difficult-to-reach areas, so the team had to improvise and use wheeled systems to get materials into place. “Everyone involved with this proj- ect faced their own challenges but the team was well prepared and everyone worked hard to get things done,” he says. “The result is a mas- terpiece.” Goncalves Masonry started in 1990 when owner Fernando Goncalves decided to establish his business in Toronto, based on a decade of industry experience. In 1997 he received an invita- tion to share some of that knowl- edge and experience with contractors in Portugal and there partnered to create a second company called Construcoes Corte Recto, Lda. In 2010 Galileo Masonry Ltd. came into being and two years later, the company expanded out- side of Ontario, immersing itself in the Newfoundland market.
