Welcome This issue of Canadian Design and Construc- tion Report includes stories about concrete, wood, and controversy. The feature and news articles reflect the challenges in producing a specialized publication. We seek to get along and communicate fairly with everyone in the industry, but not every- one agrees on everything, all the time. Our responsibility combines respect for industry groups and as- sociations with a healthy degree of independence. This means, when we write profiles on topics such as the Ontario Concrete Awards or (in the electronic edition) the Ontario WoodWorks Awards, we'll provide positive coverage of the awards and the in- dustry sector's perspective. When there are disagreements, you'll see balanced stories that seek to cover the different perspectives with balance and accuracy. The story about Ontario's prompt payment legislation takes this balancing responsibility to another level. The legislation would, if passed, be the first of its kind in Canada, and results from a National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada's (NTCCC) multi-year lobbying initiative. Ontario trade contractors achieved multi-party support for a private member's bill, but the legislation appears doomed, be- cause residential contractors and developers have expressed strong reservations about the draft legislation. I considered whether writing the story would cause problems or opportunities for the trade con- tractors who have made a good case for the legislation and decided that a truthful, fair story would help frame the issue realistically and perhaps lead to a successful conclusion. Other features, of course, are less controversial. See the reports about women in economic development, our extensive updating ar- ticle about EIFS (Exterior Insulation Finish Systems) and an update about the Win-Door show for example. Good news is great. Of course, we welcome your stories, ideas and responses. You can email me at buckshon@cadcr.com and I'll do my best to re- spond to you within a business day.
