Dryvit Systems Canada leads EIFS industry with research,
development and guidance for designers and applicators
Canadian Design and Construction Report
Dryvit Systems Canada has pioneered in the EIFS
(exterior insulation finishing systems) industry for more
than four decades, focusing on research and develop-
ment as it introduces new products and systems. The
company also makes sure that its products are applied
properly, ensuring durability and quality.
Kevin Day, Dryvit’s national sales manager, has par-
ticipated in the industry for the better part of 20 years.
He tours the country, sharing his expertise by present-
ing at industry forums as he educates the marketplace
about the EIFS's advantages.
“EIFS is a simple idea that grew quickly, and it’s in-
tuitively obvious – the most efficient way to insulate a
building is on the exterior,” he said.
Day says the construction industry is highly compet-
itive. Some critics have claimed EFIS is “cheap
cladding” and asserted it lacks durability, in part be-
cause of faulty installation practices.
“At Dryvit, we know that high performance cladding
solutions are attainable with EIFS – we have a proven
track record in Canada with over 30 years of systems
in service,” he said. “Part of my job is to get at the root
of designers’ concerns, to clarify misconceptions, and
to explain how this unique (yet simple) technology can
achieve a long service life.”
Day says the science behind EIFS proves it outper-
forms other claddings on many levels. A key feature is
the economically compelling practice of panelized EIFS.
Construction projects where timing to enclose the
building is critical can be managed more effectively
than with most other claddings. “With our network of
trained independent applicator firms, we work to de-
velop the best of the best. Our innovations push the
envelope on science and on finish options.”
While EIFS is adaptable for both new construction
and existing projects, Day says the repurposing and re-
furbishing of buildings, including over-cladding existing
apartment buildings, is a big growth market for the
product. “The addition of EIFS will improve a building’s ther-
mal performance and lifecycle. It reduces maintenance
(like repointing of brick or concrete repair) and is a cap-
ital investment that will preserve the service life of a
building,” Day says.
Day says Dryvit is constantly researching, testing
and developing new ideas, largely through consulta-
tions with designers and installers. The company also
takes the installation process seriously.
