SURREY, B.C. — Construction is now above ground at the new Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre, a project set to expand cancer services in one of British Columbia’s fastest-growing regions. The facility is scheduled to open in 2030.

“Seeing construction rise above ground highlights the incredible progress we’ve made,” said Cherie Taylor, executive director of clinical operations and capital development at BC Cancer.

Since breaking ground in 2023, the project has moved steadily through critical phases including geotechnical testing, shoring and excavation. Construction has reached the stage of above-ground development, with concrete pillars and formwork now visible.

The project has also reached the start of “90 per cent design development,” meaning the hospital and cancer centre designs are nearly complete. Teams have walked through fully constructed mock-up areas on site, providing feedback to finalize interior spaces.

“I am incredibly proud of the dedication and teamwork behind this important project,” said Robin Latondresse, senior executive director of major capital projects at the Provincial Health Services Authority. “The pace and quality of work on this project have been inspiring. This progress wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of every team member, each playing a vital role in enhancing cancer care services in Surrey and beyond.”

Partnering with Indigenous communities and patient representatives has been integral to the design process. In June, members of the project’s Indigenous Working Group and Patient and Family Advisory Council used virtual reality to walk through key areas such as the Sacred Space. BC Cancer and Fraser Health have also engaged Kwantlen, Katzie and Semiahmoo artists to explore opportunities for Indigenous artwork throughout the facility.

“It has been a true privilege to collaborate with representatives from the Kwantlen, Katzie, and Semiahmoo First Nations throughout the design process,” said Rosy Hartman, manager of Indigenous design and cultural safety at BC Cancer. “Their meaningful engagement has been instrumental in ensuring that the new hospital and cancer centre reflects their culture, stories, values and deep connection to the land.”

EllisDon Design Build Inc. is the general contractor leading construction under a Design-Build Agreement with Fraser Health. The architectural design is a collaboration between ZGF Architects Inc. and Parkin Architects Ltd.

The project is notable for its sustainability features, including being one of the first fully electric hospitals in the province. It is targeting LEED Gold certification and will include:

  • An Emergency Department with 55 treatment spaces
  • A surgical/perioperative suite with five operating rooms and four procedure rooms
  • Virtual healthcare services
  • Advanced diagnostic services
  • A new BC Cancer Centre

The facility is designed to meet or exceed LEED Gold standards, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship while addressing the healthcare needs of Surrey’s growing population.
