The construction industry is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by technological disruption, rising sustainability expectations, and evolving customer demands, according to a new report by Info-Tech Research Group.
The report, The Future of the Construction Industry, outlines how construction firms are being pushed to adopt emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and sustainable building practices. These changes are redefining how projects are managed, delivered, and how value is created across the industry, the report concludes.
“The construction industry has been among the slowest to adopt new technologies,” said Michael Adams, research analyst at Info-Tech Research Group. “However, technologies are continuing to advance, making them more applicable to practical use within the industry.
“As consumer demand increases in volume and complexity, construction companies need to focus on a digital transformation that supports their organizational goals.”
The report highlights four key trends shaping the industry in 2025:
- Sustainability: Once seen primarily as a regulatory or branding issue, sustainability is now emerging as a driver of innovation. The report emphasizes that digital tools can help construction companies cut costs, meet environmental goals, and build resilience for the future.
- Extended Realities (XR): Technologies like digital twins and immersive visualization are enhancing collaboration, improving decision-making, and allowing for real-time modeling and testing before physical construction begins.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI): The use of AI—including machine learning, intelligent automation, and generative AI—is enabling data-driven decision-making and optimization throughout the construction value chain.
- Robotics and Drones: These tools are automating quality control and safety inspections while taking on labor-intensive tasks. Their continued evolution is expanding the role of automation on construction sites.
Info-Tech’s report stresses the importance of strategic foresight—a proactive approach that helps IT leaders in construction anticipate trends, manage risks, and identify opportunities for sustainable growth. The report also notes that as autonomous construction technologies gain ground, integrating these innovations with human-centric design will lead to smarter, safer, and more sustainable communities.
Registration is now open for Info-Tech LIVE 2025 on June 10 to 12 at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. The event will bring together IT leaders, media, and exhibitors exclusive access to the latest research and networking opportunities.
