ATLANTIC CANADA — The federal government is boosting housing and infrastructure across Atlantic Canada, announcing more than $20 million to build 60 new rental units in Stratford, P.E.I., and over $63.2 million in funding for communities in Nova Scotia.

The Stratford project, located at 13 Irving Avenue, will provide affordable rental homes within walking distance of schools, grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies, and healthcare services. The investment is part of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Apartment Construction Loan Program (ACLP), which provides low-cost, fully repayable loans to developers to increase rental housing supply.

“Your new federal government is committed to driving housing supply to bring down costs,” said the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada. “This project will create much-needed rental homes for the people living and working in Stratford.”

Kent MacDonald, Member of Parliament for Cardigan, said the investment will help create a country where “everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home.”

Meanwhile, in Nova Scotia, the government is providing $63.2 million through the Canada Community-Building Fund to support local infrastructure projects, including public transit, water systems, roads and bridges. The funding also supports recreational projects, such as the Halifax Central Common Pool, which provides outdoor swimming, classes, and poolside activities.

“Building a stronger Canada begins in our own neighbourhoods,” said Sean Fraser, Member of Parliament for Central Nova and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. “By investing in the infrastructure that drives community and economic development, we’re helping communities grow in ways that are connected, inclusive, and ready for the future.”

Nova Scotia’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, John Lohr, said the funding “strengthens the foundations of our towns and cities while improving the lives of residents.”

The ACLP program, part of the National Housing Strategy, is designed to support more than 131,000 new rental homes nationwide by 2031–32. As of March 2025, CMHC has committed $23.35 billion in loans through the program to support over 59,000 rental homes. The Canada Community-Building Fund allows communities flexibility to address both current and future infrastructure needs, ensuring residents have access to safe, connected, and vibrant neighbourhoods.

Officials said these initiatives demonstrate the federal government’s approach to tackling housing challenges while strengthening the infrastructure that supports growing communities.
