The Capital Line South LRT Extension (Phase 1) is taking centre stage in Edmonton’s 2026 construction season, as major work continues on one of the city’s most significant transit expansion projects within a broader pipeline of more than 200 active construction sites.

“Building our city requires vision,” said Sara Nichols, deputy city manager of infrastructure services. “We are continually adapting and improving our built environment by balancing renewal work with long-term growth, while delivering projects residents can see, use and benefit from today.”

Major projects expected to be completed this year include the Wellington Bridge and Dawson Bridge rehabilitations. Also, significant work will happen on the Terwillegar Drive Expansion, Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion and the Imagine Jasper Avenue projects along with the Capital Line South LRT Extension and the Valley Line West LRT.

Ledcor, the Design-Build contractor for the Capital Line South LRT Extension (Phase 1) project, will close access to Twin Brooks at 12 Avenue west of 111 Street for about 10 weeks, for critical removals of the existing roadway, soil and underground utilities, as well as civil drainage, ductbank and utility work, roadwork and trackwork.

Capital Line Design-Build Ltd., a member of the Ledcor Group of Companies, with AECOM as their design partner, has been awarded the Design-Build contract for Phase 1 of the Capital Line South Extension project.

Ledcor began major construction in 2025. Major construction is anticipated to take 4 to 5 years to complete, followed by testing and commissioning.

“As construction progresses across the city, we understand that traffic disruptions are top of mind for residents,” Nichols said. “The city is doing all it can to minimize traffic impacts and is committed to keeping residents informed about detours and road closures that may affect their commutes.”

Across the city, work is guided by The City Plan and the 2023-2026 capital budget, which includes more than $7 billion for active projects, including several multi-year transformational initiatives and important maintenance and renewal projects.
