AGF say it is partnering with MONTONI in the construction of Laval’s new multifunctional cultural center in the province of Quebec.

“This bold and distinctive building will feature seven levels (five above ground and two underground) and will include a large library, creative spaces, an auditorium, an art gallery, and a dance studio,” the company says in a statement.

Technical details of the project

The construction of this complex building presents several challenges, such as large open spaces supported by tall columns. The curved walls, combined with a spectacular oculus—a circular opening across multiple levels that brings in natural light—demand high precision and technical expertise. In total, more than 2,000 metric tons of rebar will be used for this project.

Project timeline

This project is being carried out using the design-build method, where design and construction progress simultaneously as the work advances. Unlike traditional methods where all plans are finalized before construction begins, the design-build approach means that detailed plans are developed gradually. This requires AGF to adapt the rebar detailing in real time as plans are produced, demanding flexibility and the ability to meet changing project needs and deadlines.

In January 2025, AGF began the installation of rebar for the project’s first major element: a massive raft slab. This raft slab will provide a stable foundation for one of the tower cranes throughout the construction period and will also support the building’s first elevator shaft.

The construction of other elements of the building will proceed gradually, as plans become available. AGF is expected to remain involved in the project until October 2025, with the cultural center’s full completion scheduled for early 2027.

“We are proud to be part of this important project and want to acknowledge the hard work of all the teams involved,” says the statement posted on AGF’s website. “A special thank you to MONTONI for trusting AGF to help bring this project to life.”
