A group of Canada’s general contractors has launched the Canadian Construction Safety Council (CCSC), aiming to improve safety performance and set new industry benchmarks to better protect construction workers across the country.
Founding members of the CCSC include Aecon, AtkinsRéalis, Bird Construction Inc., Dragados Canada Inc., EllisDon Corporation, EBC, Graham Construction Inc., Kiewit Corporation, Ledcor Industries Inc., PCL Construction, Pennecon, and Pomerleau.
Among the Council’s first initiatives is the adoption of Type II safety helmets, which feature integrated chin straps for enhanced head protection over traditional hard hats. The CCSC is also introducing a new fall protection standard, reducing the threshold for safety measures like harnesses and guardrails from 10 feet to 6 feet, in a bid to minimize falls, which are a leading cause of injury in the industry. Furthermore, the Council is promoting the use of ANSI level 4 cut-resistant gloves to address the significant number of hand injuries sustained by nearly half a million Canadian workers annually.
CCSC’s strategic objectives include:
• Reducing Serious Injuries and Fatalities: Minimizing severe and fatal injuries by improving safety practices and protocols.
• Championing Industry Safety Improvements: Developing, adopting, and implementing best safety practices.
• Enhancing Safety Image and Relationships: Improving the industry’s safety reputation and fostering stronger relationships with clients and regulatory bodies.
• Networking and Education: Offering opportunities for members to share knowledge, access resources, and learn from each other.
• Leveraging Industry Resources: Utilizing the industry’s collective expertise to maintain high safety standards.
• Mental Health Awareness: Promoting resources and education to support the mental health and overall well-being of construction workers.
In line with these initiatives, CCSC has launched a new website outlining its mission and key focus areas for members and the broader community.
