Lafarge Canada has been chosen as the subcontractor for the paving work on Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) North Runway Modernization Program. The $133 million project aims to upgrade the runway and enhance its drainage and electrical systems, ensuring its long-term durability and resilience as a vital part of airport operations.
In partnership with Kiewit, Lafarge will supply high-performance, durable asphalt solutions that are specifically designed to handle the demands of airport runways, including heavy aircraft loads and varied weather conditions.
The project involves a full asphalt overlay of the runway and connecting taxiways, with work scheduled to start in spring 2025 and wrap up by fall. To minimize disruption to flight schedules and passenger traffic, construction will take place during overnight runway closures.

Safety is a top priority, with ongoing monitoring, inspections, and support from YVR’s comprehensive maintenance program, which ensures safe and efficient aircraft operations. The project will also create significant local economic benefits, generating approximately 100,000 additional person-hours of work and creating new job opportunities in the region.
A standout feature of this project is Lafarge’s use of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for all asphalt mixes—marking the first time the company has implemented this in Canada. EPDs offer verified, transparent data on the environmental impacts of the materials used, underscoring Lafarge’s dedication to sustainable building practices.
To further reduce the carbon footprint of the project, Lafarge will incorporate 10,000 tonnes of asphalt with 30 percent recycled content for the runway shoulders, as well as energy-efficient production methods and advanced asphalt formulations.
