The total value of building permits dropped across Canada in July, thanks to significant declines in non-residential projects.
According to the latest report from Statistics Canada, building permit values reached $11.7 billion for the month, down 1.5 per cent.
The total value of residential permits jumped 5.4 per cent to $7.4 billion in July with Ontario activity up 23.9 per cent to $3.5 billion.
July also recorded the third monthly increase in single-family home permits, up 7.6 per cent to $2.8 billion.
Also, multi-family housing construction intentions led the gains in Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island in July.
Municipalities across Canada issued permits valued at 22,300 for new dwellings in July, about 11 per cent lower than the 168,800 new intended units from permits issued between January and July 2022 and non-residential construction intentions dropped across all sectors.
Non-residential permits dropped 11.5 per cent to $4.3 billion and the institutional component fell 19.7 per cent – to $1.3 billion.
Commercial permits fell 10.8 per cent to $1.9 billion and the industrial permits fell one per cent.
