Northcrest Developments has launched a global design competition aimed at transforming the historic 1.3-mile airstrip at the former Downsview airport into The Runway at YZD, a key feature of the future mixed-use communities on the 370-acre site.
The submission deadline is Nov. 22. The Runway at YZD is envisioned as an unparalleled outdoor experience with a pedestrian-focused and publicly-accessible corridor that will become a destination for visitors to experience its creative public spaces.
Cross-disciplinary design teams are invited to submit expressions of interest to transform the two-kilometre airstrip into a key centerpiece for the future series of mixed-use communities across the expansive 370 acres. Shortlisted teams will then receive requests for proposals in the second phase and the winning team, selected by a jury led by renowned urban designer Ken Greenberg, will begin developing The Runway’s design guidelines in Q3 2025.
“The Runway at YZD reflects a growing understanding that reusing—rather than demolishing—outdated urban infrastructure can become a great source of identity and uniqueness for successful neighbourhoods,” said Greenberg. “YZD is an incredible city-building opportunity for not only Toronto, but North America, and the Runway will set the tone for much of what’s to come.”
The pedestrian-focused corridor will serve as a connector between seven complete communities and a standalone destination for the anticipated 55,000 residents and 23,000 workers. The design competition seeks innovative concepts that will not only beautify the space but also enhance public amenities, community uses, and recreational opportunities.
“This competition presents an extraordinary opportunity for design teams to make their mark by reimagining a cherished piece of Toronto’s industrial heritage into a world-class four-season public space,” said Kristy Shortall, senior vice-president of development at Northcrest. “Runway is the heart of YZD and embodies our ambitions of creating vibrant, sustainable communities centered on people.”
