PCL Construction has announced its role as presenting sponsor of The Hospital for Sick Children’s (SickKids) 150th birthday celebration, deepening its longstanding partnership with the Toronto-based pediatric hospital.
“PCL’s connection to SickKids runs deep and we are proud to take on the presenting role for SickKids’ 150th birthday,” said Monique Buckberger, vice president and district manager of PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Toronto). “From constructing the new Patient Support Centre to leading the charge for SickKids GetLoud, PCL is committed to helping build a brighter future for SickKids.”
As part of the milestone celebration, SickKids has launched a public art initiative featuring 150 balloon sculptures across the country. Each sculpture recognizes a major achievement in the hospital’s history. PCL is hosting two of the sculptures.
One is located at PCL’s Greater Toronto Area office in Oakville and celebrates a 1996 SickKids medical first: the world’s first blood type incompatible heart transplant for infants. The second sculpture is installed at the SickKids Patient Support Centre in Toronto, a 22-storey education and administration building constructed by PCL and opened in 2023.
The Patient Support Centre houses the SickKids Learning Institute and a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre. It plays a key role in the hospital’s long-term redevelopment plan, supporting more than 1,000 medical learners annually.
“Embracing PCL’s employee ownership culture and our purpose of building a better future together, we are dedicated to supporting this cause that is near and dear to the hearts of our employees and their loved ones,” Buckberger said.
To mark the hospital’s 150th anniversary, SickKids Foundation is hosting a public celebration at Nathan Phillips Square on June 7, 2025. The event will feature food, live performances, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to support the hospital’s mission.
