PCL Construction has been selected as the construction manager for the Calgary International Airport’s West Runway Rehabilitation project.
The project will include removal and replacement of the existing pavement structure. Upgrades to the runway’s aging electrical and drainage systems and supporting infrastructure will also be included in the design scope. The project will also include improvements to existing taxiways and aircraft movement surfaces.
“Given PCL’s depth of experience, the authority is confident in their ability to help contribute to this historic project in a safe and efficient manner,” Chris Miles, chief operating officer for the Calgary Airport Authority said in a news release last week.
The Calgary International Airport’s west runway (17R-35L) was built in phases starting in 1939. Since its original construction, the surface has been restored multiple times, but studies confirmed a full-depth structural and electrical rehabilitation is necessary.
Work will include replacing the existing pavement structure and upgrading its electrical and drainage systems, while also improving supporting infrastructure, such as taxiways and aircraft movement surfaces.
“Our team of industry-leading construction experts will ensure the airport’s world-class guest experience is maintained while we strategically rebuild one of three critical runways,” said Alistair McKnight, PCL’s district manager for Calgary and Southern Alberta. “We are grateful for The Authority’s continued trust and partnership with PCL as we embark on this important project with them.”
The project also includes installing new Runway End Safety Areas, as required by Transport Canada and will create about 300 construction jobs.Design work was completed in December 2022 and the anticipated groundbreaking was postponed in order for YYC to seek more government funding.
Construction is anticipated to break ground this spring and wrap up in 2025, according to the airport authority’s 2022 report.

Over the last 15 years, PCL has completed over one billion dollars of civil infrastructure at YYC, including construction of the East Runway, the Airport Trail Interchanges and Tunnel as well as the East De-icing Apron, Buffer Tank and Ice House. Learn more about this project here.
