Qatar to invest in major construction and infrastructure projects in Canada

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Qatar has committed to making “significant strategic investments” in Canada that could accelerate delivery of major infrastructure and building projects and create jobs across the construction sector.

Speaking at a news conference in Doha, Carney said the anticipated capital infusion would help get large projects built faster while supporting energy development and long-term economic growth.

“This is about building together,” Carney said, describing the move as a new chapter in Canada–Qatar relations.

While details of specific projects were not disclosed, Carney said the investments would target priority sectors including infrastructure, energy and emerging technologies—areas that could have implications for major construction work in Ontario and other provinces.

The prime minister also said Canada plans to finalize a long-stalled Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Qatar by this summer, a step he said would provide greater certainty for investors involved in large-scale capital projects.

In addition to investment commitments, the two countries will work to strengthen cultural and business ties, including expanding direct flights between Canada and Qatar to support tourism and commercial activity.

“When the people of different countries are familiar with each other’s cultures and perspectives, they trust each other more,” Carney said. “And they also want to do more together, to build together.”

Canada will also establish a defence attaché in Doha as part of efforts to deepen partnerships in defence and security-related industries.

Earlier Sunday, Carney met with Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, following an official welcoming ceremony.
