Aecon has launched an ambassador program to attract the next generation of skilled trades professionals. Volunteers from various sectors will host hands-on career days at secondary schools and participate in industry career fairs across Canada, the U.S., and internationally.

“As we face a significant global pipeline of infrastructure projects and an aging workforce, it’s critical to engage with young people and underrepresented groups to inspire the next wave of tradespeople,” said Angela Green, vice-president of human resources at Aecon. “With over 200,000 skilled trades roles set to be needed in Ontario over the next decade, the Aecon Ambassador Program offers a creative way to collaborate with secondary schools and like-minded organizations to promote the skilled trades as a desirable career path.”

The program has kicked off in Ontario, with the first three career day events at Dunbarton High School, Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering, and Markville Secondary School in Unionville. Volunteers from Aecon joined forces with operational staff to engage over 200 students in partnership with JA Central Ontario, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring young people to succeed in the global economy.

“While construction continues to rely on the expertise of dedicated tradespeople, the evolution of the industry has expanded to include a wide array of functional services opportunities,” said Nicole Court, vice-president of corporate affairs at Aecon. “Through the Aecon Ambassador Program, we’re dedicated to educating future talent about the many roles available in the industry.”

The program will also recognize employees who demonstrate exceptional commitment to volunteering at events. To be recognized as an Aecon Ambassador, employees must participate in a set number of recruitment, education, and industry events each year. Those who meet the criteria will become part of a community of Aecon Ambassadors, where they can share their experiences.

“We want to create a network for employees who consistently promote the trades and Aecon while balancing their busy careers. This is a fantastic way to acknowledge their dedication and passion for mentoring the next generation of skilled tradespeople,” added Court.
