Less than one month remaining before registration for US$2 million Holcim Awards competition closes
The thirdInternational Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction will close for registration on March 23, 2011. Entries must be submitted online at www.holcimawards.org. The competition recognizes and celebrates forward-looking and innovative projects, concepts and technologies in the fields of architecture, urban design, civil engineering and related fields. It is open to professionals, academics, students and project owners.
Past Canadian winners include Greening the Infrastructure at Benny Farm in Montreal which won Gold in the 2005 North American competition and Bronze in the Global phase in 2006. In 2008, Living with Lakes Centre for freshwater restoration and research in Sudbury, Ontario, was honored with the Bronze award in the North American competition. Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto won an Acknowledgement Prize that same year.
“Receiving the international recognition of the Holcim Awards was a major turning point in our fundraising effort to complete the construction of the Living with Lakes Centre in Sudbury. I truly believe that we would not have succeeded without it, especially in this difficult financial time,” said Professor John Gunn of Living with Lakes Centre for freshwater restoration and research. These projects have all been completed or are in the final stages of construction since winning the Holcim Awards.
The Holcim Awards, an initiative of the Swiss based Holcim Foundation, have two categories: a Main category for projects with a high probability of execution, for which construction must have started after July 1, 2010, and a “Next Generation” category for university students in the final year of their bachelor program or above (including Masters and PhD programs) to submit their visions and ideas at a conceptual level. Project owners, teams and students can enter more than one project for the competition. Step-by-step instructions on how to enter the competition are available at: www.holcimawards.org/guides.
